Furnace Won't Ignite? Check These First

← Back to all articles

Before anything else, confirm the thermostat is set to HEAT and a few degrees above room temperature. It sounds obvious, but a bumped setting or dead thermostat batteries are behind a surprising number of no-heat calls.

Next, check the furnace power switch (it looks like a light switch nearby) and your breaker panel. Then check the filter — many furnaces have a safety that prevents ignition when airflow is blocked.

If those are all fine and it still won't light, the issue may be the igniter, flame sensor, or gas supply — components best left to a licensed technician. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your utility, then us.
